Can I get a thumbs up?
Plakat (PK)
Known as the plakat or plakad, this short finned betta is the most resembling of wild and traditional fighting bettas. Plakats are essentially short finned bettas, there are 3 sub classifications. HMPK is a halfmoon plakat (needs 180 degree spread). CTPK is crowntail plakat (has at least 33% web reduction). Lastly there is the traditional plakat. While the halfsun plakat has not been recognized by the IBC, I consider it one. It is a HMPK with ray reduction less than 33%, this also would qualify combtail plakat which would just be a PK with ray reduction less than 33%. There is also the doubletail plakat which has a broader dorsal fin and two caudal fins. There can be halfsun doubletail plakats, combtail doubletail plakats, halfmoon doubletail plakats, crowntail doubletail plakats, and so on. Plakat’s are not as inbred so they are generally hardier and more resistant to disease.
Veiltail (VT)
The most common type of Betta splendens it is found in every pet store. It was a long anal and dorsal fin. Its caudal fin droops down and creates a veil. VT is dominant and therefore undesirable for breeding. The VT is not accepted in betta shows due to the fact that they are all mutts.
Spade Tail (SPT)
The spade tail has equal/symmetrical spread on either side of its caudal fin and it finishes with a point instead of a droop.
Round Tail (ST)
Has an equal and symmetrical rounded tail. Sometimes mistaken for a delta tail, but deltas have straight edges on their fins.
Halfsun
This is essentially a combtail halfmoon, which is created from breeding a crowntail to a halfmoon. Web reduction is less than 33% and when flared the tail is 180 degrees.
Combtail
When a crowntail is crossed with any other tail type and has less than 33% web reduction.
Crowntail (CT)
Crowntails have spiky fins which are really just the webbing on their tails. To be classified as a CT, the bettas needs to have at least 33% web reduction. There are single rayed, double rayed, triple rayed, cross rayed, and so on. Prone to fin curling, bloating and constipation. They are more sensitive to pH and hardness.
Double Tail (DT)
This is when there are two caudal fins instead of one. They will have a very broad anal and dorsal fin. The body is stunted and short, and they are prone to swim bladder issues in life. This trait is combined with halfmoons, crowntails and plakats.
Delta (DeT)
Has a large tail spread but far less than a halfmoons. Unlike veiltails they gave a very large dorsal fin and their tail is symmetrical.
Super Delta (sDeT)
The super delta has a tail almost as large and spread as a half moons, but not quite. 179 degrees and under are super deltas.
Halfmoon (HM)
This type of betta has a full spread of 180 degrees. This forms a D.
Over Halfmoon (OHM)
There tail spread is greater than 180 degrees.
Rosetails + Feathertails
These are halfmoons or over halfmoons that have such excessive branching of their rays that it causes ruffled feathers. They will usually have bad scale or short ventral fins due to inbreeding and mutations.
